New salaries for Buhari, ministers, govs, others
Following 50 per cent drop in revenue, inflation and the high cost of living, the Federal Government has commenced the review of the Remuneration Act which will affect what the president, vice president, governors, and others will earn.
The review will also affect the remunerations of other political officeholders including the ministers, the National Assembly members and the judiciary.
Speaking exclusively to Daily Sun at the weekend, Chairman of Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), Elias Mbam, said the review is undergoing a process to determine whether it will be reviewed upward or downward.
He, however, noted that given the harsh realities on ground, the 2008 Remuneration Act must be reviewed.
“The commission is not insensitive to the realities on ground. There is a drop in the oil price, there is a general economic downward trend. Many states are even finding it difficult to pay salaries. In view of this situation, the commission has commenced the review of the remuneration of the present Act of 2008 and by the time we conclude, we will make public our position with regard to the new Remuneration Act,” he said.
Mbam said the commission will consider other things in tandem with what is happening in other parts of the world.
“The thing is that we are not working in isolation of other parts of the world. We are also looking at what is obtainable elsewhere. What is being paid in the private sector. What type of work do you do? What are the risks? Does the work require the allowance that you are earning? What are the shortcomings of the present Remuneration Act? What is the rate of inflation? So, it is not something you just say, increase or decrease. But certainly, there will be some changes,” he emphasized.
On the time-frame of the new remuneration law, the chairman said it should come up with a new proposal before the end of the third quarter.
“It is before the end of September because when we come out with our new proposal, it will still go through the National Assembly for the executive arm of the government. But for the legislators, our determined emolument is final. When we conclude, whatever we decide for the legislators is final. But that of the executive will still go through legislative process. But whatever they will decide finally will not be more than what the commission decided,” Mbam noted..
At the moment, the President earns N3.51 million per year, Vice President (N3.03 million), Minister (N2.02 million), Minister of State (N1.95 million) and Special Adviser (N1.94 million), Governor (N2.22 million), Deputy Governor (N2.11 million), and Commissioners (N1.33 million).
Police rescue suspected kidnapper in Ondo
Men of the Ondo State Police Command have rescued a 25-year-old man suspected to be a kidnapper from being killed by a mob in Akure, the state capital.
The suspected kidnapper was about to be set ablaze when the police arrived the scene of the incident and dispersed the crowd. According to an eyewitness’ account, the suspect was arrested by some youths who accused him of trying to lure some kids to his side in an effort to kidnap them under the guise of being a lunatic.
It was gathered that some items were found on the suspect when he was apprehended by the youths. The items include passport-sized photographs of different people, picture of a teenage girl, Tecno brand handset, cash, female dresses as well as Holy Bible and Quran.
The discovery of the items raised suspicion that he might be a kidnapper and not a lunatic as he had claimed. The suspect who was striped naked was beaten and almost set ablaze before the Police rescued him.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the state command, Mr. Wole Ogodo who confirmed the incident explained that the suspect was a psychiatric patient.
Ogodo explained that the parents of the suspect had been contacted and they confirmed that he escaped from a psychiatric hospital in Akure, where he was receiving treatment.
ONE Campaign: Omotola, Waje, Yemi Alade unveil Strong Girl
Top Nigerian artists, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, Waje and Yemi Alade have teamed up with ONE Campaign, Save the Children, and Action 2015 to launch a theme song and video entitled, Strong Girl.
Produced by Cobhams Asuquo and featuring nine females African artistes, the song is a rallying cry to empower girls and women across the world. Already, the song has gone viral after a campaign featuring people taking selfies of themselves flexing their arms, with the hashtag #strengthie, to show solidarity for girls and women. The strengthie symbol is being used the promote the song worldwide, and notable women such as Malala Yousafzai, Danai Gurira, Shonda Rhimes, and Mary J. Blige began posting strengthies to their social media accounts in support of the campaign.
Talking about her involvement in the campaign, Omotola said. “I am fortunate to be a young woman living her dreams and a trailblazer of my generation but I also recognize that many women and girls are not so fortunate. Women and girls are disproportionately affected by the injustice of poverty and inequality. But when we invest in women and girls, we increase and accelerate the chances of overcoming extreme poverty.”
Waje, whose sultry voice is unmistakable and effective in delivering the hook, said the campaign means a lot to her. “This is one of the most profound things I have done in my life. I am doing this for the African woman so she doesn’t have to die in childbirth. I am doing this so that girls in rural Africa can complete primary school education. I am doing this because it is the right and smart thing to do. Empowering girls and women is an idea whose time has come.”
Yemi Alade did not fail to impress on the track, once again proving why she is one of Africa’s biggest vocalists and entertainers. She said: “In Nigeria, as in other parts of the world, it is obvious that girls and women are prevented from reaching their full potential due to social, cultural, and even legal constraints. That is why it is important for me as a woman, as a strong girl, to join my sisters from across the continent and tell the world that we can’t fight the injustice of extreme poverty without fighting the immense gender inequality that persists. Our leaders must invest more and better in the health, education and economic empowerment of women and girls so that they can unleash their human, social, political and economic potential.”
The Strong Girl campaign is already backed by more than 36 of the world’s most powerful women including Beyoncé, Meryl Streep, Lady Gaga, Angelique Kidjo and other leading women from the world of business, arts, politics and activism. They have written an open letter to Germany’s Chancellor, Angela Merkel and African Union Commission chairman, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, who will both host crucial summits in the coming months that should set us on a path to agreeing Global Goals that put women’s empowerment at their heart.
Death rumour boosted my career’
Actress, Angela Okorie is one of the Nollywood thespians that have found success in movie production. The former Delta Soap gal, who has just wrapped up work on her soon-to-be-released film entitled Nwa Abakaliki in South Africa, in this interview with Entertainer, opens up on her career and regrets.
Excerpts:
What have you been up to lately?
I have been on and off locations doing what I love doing best, movies.
When is your new movie, Nwa Abakaliki in South Africa hitting Nollywood?
Oh, you know about it (laughter)? It will be out soon. My fans should watch out! A lot of people are already waiting for the film and I am confident that they will not be disappointed.
Tell us about the film?
Nwa Abakaliki is the story of a girl who though naïve does not joke about her moral life. Her husband is based abroad but she puts up a village lifestyle that is devoid of modernity yet everyone who comes across her likes her. And there is language barrier because the only language she understands is her native Abakaliki vernacular. I think it is a beautiful comedy everybody should watch out for.
Did you shoot the entire film in South Africa?
We shot part of it in South Africa but shot the village scenes in Nigeria. I used two directors, a Nigerian who directed the Nigerian scenes and a South African who directed the South African scenes.
Some people believe that you usually battle with comedy roles while trying to interpret your lines. If that is true, why do you still insist on doing comedy?
No, no… that is not true at all. I have never struggled interpreting comedy roles. I have done a lot of comedy and I still get called up to do comedy. I am a professional and I can play any role with ease including comic roles.
What was the budget like considering that the shuttle between Nigeria and South Africa could be capital intensive?
The budget was quite high but I thank God who gave us the grace to pull through.
There have been instances where producers kept artistes stranded after venturing into high-budget movies but got struck due to paucity of funds midway into production.
Some of your fans feel that you have lost your old ‘Delta Girl’ figure. What is responsible for the increase in size?
No, I don’t think I am getting out of shape but I agree that there have been some added flesh here and there. It happens sometimes. You cannot look the same all your life.
Any plan to hit the gym soon?
Of course, I do. I always visit the gym whenever time permits. But I guess I have to pay more attention to it now. You know the job is so stressful and the gym is a sure bet to keep fit and be in shape.
There have been a couple of controversial stories about you which you once ascribed to your enemies and mischief makers. What do you think inspired such hatred against you?
I wish I knew the reason. All I know is that you don’t have to do any wrong to be hated; everybody must not like you. The truth about life is that if people don’t hate or criticise you, it shows that you are not important. You must be important for people to hate you and try to run you down. But the more people hate you, the more you will progress if you are nice. And for me, I don’t give a hoot about my haters as long as what I am doing is right; I don’t lose sleep over haters.
Sometime last year you joined the likes of Nkem Owoh and some other artistes whose death rumour went viral on social media. Have you forgiven those behind that rumour?
Yes I have. The thing is that sponsors of such do not realise that such evil campaigns usually turn out a publicity campaign for their victims. I was actually working on set when they started that rumour and suddenly my phone line became inundated with calls. A lot of people were crying and raising concern. And I told them that I was alive and kicking. That death-rumour incident made me to realise how much people loved me. It even made me more popular. The evil peddlers had only added many more years to my life. So, I don’t care about what people say about me.
You were once quoted that your husband is the best in the world and some people interpreted the statement as being directed at your haters. Was that the situation?
I always try to keep my home and my profession apart. But I can confirm to you that my husband loves me and understands me so much. And that is what matters most to me.
Do you still remember how you said ‘yes’ the day he proposed to you?
(Laughter) I remember that he proposed to me twice and I said yes the second time. We courted for about three years before we finally got married.
How was it for you facing the camera for the first time in Nollywood?
It did not pose any challenge to me because Nollywood was not my first time of facing the camera. Remember that I was into modelling before hitting Nollywood. And moreover, facing the camera is something I have been doing since my childhood days. As a child, I was doing drama in church and during my school days I also did drama. However, acting before the camera is really a different ball game.
What is the craziest thing a fan has done to you?
It was when I travelled to the US and this fan suddenly walked up to me and kissed me. I was screaming but he just laughed it off and walked away. He was like, ‘now that I have kissed you, what can you do about it?’
How close are you to God?
I am very close to God; I don’t joke with my God at all. I say my prayers regularly to appreciate Him for always being there for me. He is my all and the reason for my life; I put him first in whatever I do.
How often do you get romantic advances from men especially those who are unaware or refuse to accept that you are married?
Ah, no, everybody knows that I am married; I no longer experience such.
Let us talk about your tattoo. Why did you inscribe the sign of the cross as part of your tattoo?
My tattoo is not the sign of the cross but the face of Jesus Christ and what is written there is ‘In God Almighty I Trust.’
Why did you choose that line?
I love God and trust only in Him. The tattoo has been there forever, even before I started acting. If I had done it after I started acting, I would not have done such a big tattoo and I would have had it at a hidden place. Most times we have to cover it up with costume so it does not affect the film I am shooting.
Former Olympic Athlete Comes Out As ‘Woman’, Now Known As ‘Caitlyn Jenner’
The former Bruce Jenner has gone public with her new name — Caitlyn — and a cover shoot for Vanity Fair.
“If I was lying on my deathbed and I had kept this secret and never ever did anything about it, I would be lying there saying, ‘You just blew your entire life,'” she said in an interview excerpt released by the magazine on Monday.
The photos, for the magazine’s July issue, were taken by Annie Leibovitz.
“Bruce always had to tell a lie,” Jenner said in a video released by the magazine. “He was always living a lie. Every day, he always had a secret. From morning till night. Caitlyn doesn’t have any secrets.”
“As soon as the Vanity Fair cover comes out, I’m free.”
Jenner, 65, also debuted verified accounts on Twitter and Facebook. The Twitter account reached 1 million followers in 4 hours and 3 minutes, Twitter said — surpassing even President Barack Obama, who needed almost five hours to reach that milestone.
Jenner confirmed plans to make the transition to life as a woman in an ABC interview in April.
ESPN announced within hours that Jenner, the 1976 Olympic men’s decathlon gold medalist, will be presented the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the ESPY awards in July. The award is given to “to individuals whose contributions transcend sports,” ESPN said.
